Rookie guard Kam Jones of the Indiana Pacers was arrested Monday morning after a brief police pursuit on Interstate 65. Authorities say the 23-year-old was clocked at speeds exceeding 90 mph in a 50 mph zone, weaving through traffic, before finally stopping near the Fletcher Avenue exit in Indianapolis.

What happened

According to the Indiana State Police, a trooper attempted to pull Jones over around 9:50 a.m. on southbound I-65 near the North Split for erratic driving. Jones allegedly did not pull over immediately and the interaction escalated into a short chase that ended near downtown.

Once stopped, Jones told the officer he had been late for the Pacers’ practice and claimed he did not realise he was being pulled over. “Mr. Jones stated that he did not know he was speeding and was running late for practice for the Indiana Pacers,” according to court documents.

Charges & arrest details

Jones was booked into the Marion County Adult Processing Centre and faces multiple counts:

  • Misdemeanor reckless driving.

  • Felony resisting law enforcement.

  • Additional traffic offences stemming from dangerous driving behavior.

Bond was reportedly set at roughly $1,000. He is scheduled to appear in court at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, October 23.

Impact on his career & team

Jones was selected 38th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft after starring at Marquette University, where he averaged 19 points and 5.9 assists per game in his senior season. The rookie deal with the Pacers carries a four-year value of $8.6 million.

At the time of the incident, Jones was sidelined due to a back injury and had yet to make his NBA debut. The arrest comes just days before the Pacers’ season opener. Team officials issued a brief statement:

“We are aware of the situation involving Kam Jones. We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any further comment on the matter at this time.”

What’s next

Jones will await his arraignment and the progression of the legal case. The charges, particularly the felony count, carry the potential for serious consequences, including jail time if convicted.

For the Pacers, the timing presents a challenge. With key players already injured, the team’s depth at guard was under pressure. This development could influence roster decisions and rotation strategy early in the season.

Context & community reaction

The arrest has drawn attention in both Memphis — where Jones attended high school at Evangelical Christian School — and Indianapolis. Some local commentators are focusing on the contrast between his promising basketball trajectory and the risky driving behaviour alleged. Others emphasise that the case is only beginning and caution against presumption of guilt.

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as more details become available.
