Dayton Withholds Adam Njie From Competition Over Eligibility Concerns Tied to Gambling

The Dayton Flyers have announced that guard Adam Njie Jr. will be withheld from competition as the school investigates “potential eligibility concerns” related to events that occurred prior to his enrollment.

• Njie transferred to Dayton after a freshman season with the Iona Gaels, where he averaged 12.2 (or 12.4) points and 4.2 assists per game and earned All-MAAC Rookie Team honors.

• At Iona, he started 27 games in his freshman year and showed promise as a lead guard.

Dayton Athletic Director Neil Sullivan issued a statement indicating:

“The University of Dayton has been notified by the NCAA of potential eligibility concerns related to Adam Njie, connected to matters that occurred prior to his enrollment at the University. In light of these concerns and the ongoing review process, Adam will not be participating in athletic competition at this time.”

Sources indicate that the eligibility issue in question is tied to gambling. However, this case is not tied to the front-page probe involving Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier. A separate but timely round of investigations launched by the NCAA in September has ignited growing concern over issues regarding gambling in collegiate sports.
